Enabling action in your career (or any other domain!) by using “distinctions”

Recently, almost simultaneously, two of my coaching clients had a similar kind of challenge arise. Both of them came up against middlesence career issues—where to go next in their well-established and successful careers. When you’re “stuck” in the middle of an issue like this, the way out often just looks like a nebulous blur. But with some work, the nebulous blur begins to take shape and a solution begins to form. Of course, in retrospect—after the problem is solved, we often realize that the answer was staring us in the face but we couldn’t see it. So how do you go from a “nebulous blur” to seeing a solid solution? One of the primary keys is by creating “distinctions.” Since distinctions are such a critical component to getting “unstuck,” I thought it would be valuable to spend some time here talking about them.

Hello World!, Coaching, and Job Search

Filed under: Jobs, Coaching — Dr. Steve at 3:00 pm on Friday, February 3, 2006

Hello World! seems like a fit title for my-first ever blog post. But I also have some coaching comments and a hot job search tip.

There’s so much to talk about and so much that I want to share that I truly don’t know where to start. Feels like a first date when you’re both searching for something to say, before you’ve “clicked.”

Well, as a coach I know there’s a lesson here. What is it? When you’re about to start something new, there can be some fear or at least apprehension of the unknown. Then you have a decision to make. You can sit and observe and wait until the time feels right; you can go away and come back some other time; you can just jump in.

Now, I know the right choice depends on the situation. If we’re talking about performing brain surgery, for me, the right choice would be to “go away” or perhaps “sit and observe” if I was curious enough. But I’m talking about blogging.

I’m taking the “just jump in” approach. I recommend this approach when the stakes aren’t life and death. It’s an excellent way to accelerate your learning and even have fun in the process.

How do you approach starting something new?

“Something new” for me right now is blogging. Let me hear from you about your approach to something new you’ve tried. You can use the reply form below. (OH NO! I don’t know how to get the reply form to appear. Well, if you see it, you’ll know I figured it out.) I’ll share your helpful ideas in future posts.
